Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the mcu spiderman movies and I think tom holland is one of the best peter parker’s we’ve ever had. That being said, the mcu spiderman movies are by no means actually spiderman movies. And it’s not like any of the other less popular mcu characters where this is the first adaptation and people might not know too much about the comics, this is spiderman, perhaps the single most iconic and popular superhero in all of marvel comics. There’s so much lore and history to this character, and we’ve had so many adaptations that have set the foundation of what we expect from spiderman media. And there are certain iconic elements of peter parker’s story that you just cannot erase. His relationship with ben and may, how he was shaped by the loss of his parents then his uncle, his financial struggles, the fact that he’s very much a friendly neighbourhood spiderman. And not in the condescending way the mcu does it, but more so in the fact that he fights for people who no one else would care for. He’s not meant to be out there leading the avengers in intergalactic wars especially not as a sixteen year old. The mcu movies have stripped peter of his identity as spiderman and made him ir*n man jr. We don’t see his relationship with uncle ben or even aunt may because he now has t*ny. Every villain he faces is a direct product of t*ny and only fights peter because of his association with him. There are no iconic spiderman villains, no iconic spiderman characters, there’s nothing but regurgitated ir*n man storylines to fit him into a narrative that was never his. And I wish stans acknowledged why we are so angry about it, it’s not just blind hatred for t*ny or the ir*n man cinematic universe, it’s valid criticism for a story that shares nothing with the legacy of spiderman other than a name.
not only that, but mcu peter barely qualifies as peter parker. mcu peter is handsome, intelligent etc. comic peter wasn’t anything like that, the entire point of peter parker was to make him very relatable as just a good kid who got superpowers. him being a nerd and liking Star Wars was probably the most in character he has been in these movies. he wasn’t meant to be the smartest, hottest kid in school, and he definitely pays for the consequences of his actions (in homecoming, peter wrecked the dudes food place from his fight and there’s literally no consequences). but the big cherry on top is that yea, no wonder mcu peter is nothing like comic peter, he’s a literal fucking white miles morales. so many of miles’ character traits and origin are in the mcu spiderman (admitted by the homecoming director) and it’s infuriating. how the fresh fuck does the mcu plan on having miles as a part of the mcu when peter is essentially him? I’m okay with introducing new ideas to spiderman and I’m sorry if it seems like I have such a conservative view on what makes peter parker but mcu spiderman may as well not even be called peter. not when the writers are stealing character traits from chatacters like miles, a black latino character, who rightfully deserves a his own live action movie. he may as well be a completely different character. the mcu grasps spiderman as a popular, young character (excluding infinity war bc that was just a big slap in the face to spiderman) but fails to grasp who peter parker is - a nice kid who got powers thrusted on him that is also trying to carry on the memory of his uncle ben. the mcu does not understand what made peter parker such an iconic character in the first place
